The foods that cause the most emergencies

Every year, animal poison control centers get thousands of calls about pets that ate something they shouldn't. The most dangerous foods for dogs are xylitol (in sugar-free gum, candy and some peanut butters), grapes and raisins, chocolate, onions and garlic, macadamia nuts and alcohol. See the full list with danger levels in foods dogs can't eat, or type a food into our "Can my dog eat…?" checker.

If your pet ate something toxic, call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away, even if there are no symptoms yet: the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661.

How much to feed

Overweight is one of the most common health problems in dogs and cats, and it shortens their lives. Use our pet food calculator to work out daily calories and cups of food, and remember that treats shouldn't be more than 10% of the day's calories.
