How long can a dog be left alone? What US laws say and what's fair

No US federal law sets a maximum number of hours a dog can be left alone at home. What the law does require, in every state, is that you provide adequate food, water and shelter; leaving a dog without them can count as neglect under state animal cruelty laws. Many states also regulate chaining or tethering dogs and leaving them in parked cars. Beyond the law, most adult dogs shouldn't be left alone for more than 6-8 hours, and puppies much less.

What US laws actually say

  • Animal cruelty and neglect laws exist in every state. They generally require owners to provide necessary food, water, shelter and care. Leaving a dog for days without care, or in conditions that put them at risk, can lead to charges.
  • Tethering laws: as of 2022, 23 states and Washington, D.C., had laws on chaining or tethering dogs, covering things like tether length, how long a dog can be tied up, and access to food, water and shelter. Many cities and counties add their own rules.
  • Hot car laws: 32 states and D.C. have laws on animals left unattended in vehicles in dangerous conditions (as of 2026). In 16 of them (Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont and Wisconsin), a bystander who breaks into a car to rescue an animal in imminent danger can be protected from civil liability if they follow the law's conditions.
  • Local ordinances may also cover barking, leaving dogs outdoors in extreme weather, and keeping dogs confined.

How long is reasonable by age

These are rough guidelines: every dog is different, and temperament, breed and training matter a lot.

Dog's age Rough maximum time alone
Puppy, 2-3 months 1-2 hours
Puppy, 4-6 months 2-4 hours
Adult (1-7 years), used to it 4-6 hours, occasionally up to 8
Senior or dog with health problems Depends on their needs; often less than 4-6 hours

An adult dog needs to go out to potty at least 3-4 times a day. Regularly holding it much longer is uncomfortable and may contribute to urinary problems.

Signs your dog struggles when left alone

  • Barks, howls or whines for long periods (neighbors often mention it).
  • Destroys doors, furniture or cushions, especially near the exit.
  • Has accidents indoors even though they're house-trained.
  • Drools a lot, pants or is frantic when you come home.

These can be signs of separation anxiety. Your vet or a certified trainer or behaviorist can help with a gradual training plan.

Options if you're away for long hours

  1. A dog walker for a midday walk.
  2. Doggy daycare, a few days a week or every day.
  3. Family, friends or neighbors who can let your dog out.
  4. A long walk before you leave: a tired dog who has done their business handles alone time better.
  5. Stuffable and puzzle toys to keep them busy.

According to Rover's 2026 cost survey, dog walking, daycare and similar services cost about $210-$375 a year for a typical owner, and more than $900 a year in high-cost cities. If you travel, use a boarding kennel or a pet sitter: never leave your dog alone overnight, even with extra food and water. These costs count toward the annual cost of owning a dog.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get in trouble for leaving my dog home alone during the workday?

Leaving a dog home during a workday isn't illegal in itself. Problems arise if the dog lacks water, food or a safe space, is left in dangerous conditions, or if barking leads to nuisance complaints under local rules.

Can I leave my dog in the car for just a minute?

It's very risky: according to the AVMA, a car's interior can heat up about 19 °F in 10 minutes, reaching more than 110 °F on a 70 °F day, even in the shade or with the windows cracked. Many states have laws against it. Read more in heatstroke in dogs.

How long can cats be left alone?

There's no specific legal limit for cats either. Cats are more independent, but someone should check on them at least once a day to refresh food and water and scoop the litter box.
